How We Score Sports APIs
Every score on APISports.net is backed by a transparent, reproducible methodology. We use three distinct score types — Editorial, Benchmark, and Fit — so you always know exactly what a number means.
Editorial Score
Manual evaluation by our editorial team. We test each API hands-on: read the docs, make real API calls, evaluate code samples, and assess overall developer experience.
Benchmark Score
Automated performance testing. We measure latency, uptime, and error rates from multiple regions over a sustained period. Raw metrics are weighted and normalized.
Fit Score
Personalized match score based on your specific requirements. The Find My API tool calculates how well each provider matches your sport, use case, budget, and technical needs.
Overall Score Formula
The Overall Score shown on provider pages and Top Picks is a weighted average of Editorial and Benchmark scores:
Editorial Score carries more weight because it captures qualitative factors (docs quality, API design) that automated tests cannot measure. Benchmark Score provides objective performance data. Fit Score is calculated separately and does not affect the Overall Score.
Editorial Score Breakdown
Our editorial team evaluates each API across six categories. Here's what we look at and how much each category matters:
Data Coverage
Number of sports, leagues, and competitions covered. Depth of historical data, live data availability, and stat granularity (player-level, team-level).
Developer Experience
API design quality, SDK availability, documentation clarity, code examples, authentication simplicity, and response format consistency.
Reliability
Uptime track record, error rate consistency, status page transparency, incident response time, and SLA availability.
Pricing & Value
Free tier generosity, pricing transparency, cost per request at scale, and whether pricing scales predictably with usage.
Live Data
Real-time data delivery speed, WebSocket support, webhook availability, and update frequency for live scores and odds.
Documentation
Completeness of API docs, OpenAPI/Swagger spec availability, changelog maintenance, and developer onboarding quality.
Benchmark Score Methodology
Our automated benchmarking system tests each API from multiple regions on a daily basis:
Latency (40% weight)
- • Measured as time-to-first-byte (TTFB) from US-East and EU-West regions
- • 100 requests per test cycle, median value recorded
- • Tested against the provider's primary fixtures/scores endpoint
- • Lower latency = higher score
Uptime (35% weight)
- • Tracked via 5-minute interval health checks
- • 30-day rolling window for uptime calculation
- • Any HTTP 5xx or timeout counts as downtime
- • Higher uptime = higher score
Error Rate (25% weight)
- • Percentage of requests returning errors (4xx, 5xx, or malformed responses)
- • 500 requests per test cycle
- • Rate-limit responses (429) excluded from error calculation
- • Lower error rate = higher score
Test Conditions
- • Regions: US-East (Virginia), EU-West (Ireland)
- • Public API endpoints only (no authenticated endpoints tested)
- • Tests respect provider rate limits
- • Results updated daily, 30-day rolling averages
Transparency note: Benchmark tests are conducted against public endpoints within rate limits. Actual performance under heavy load or with authenticated endpoints may differ. We encourage developers to run their own tests for production-critical decisions.
Fit Score Methodology
The Fit Score is calculated by our Find My API tool based on your inputs. It measures how well a provider matches your specific needs — not how good the API is in general.
| Input Factor | What We Match On |
|---|---|
| Sport / League | Provider must support your selected sport and target leagues |
| Use Case | Match against provider's bestFor tags (live scores, fantasy, analytics, etc.) |
| Live / Historical Data | LiveData and HistoricalData flags must match your requirements |
| Budget | Pricing plans filtered by your monthly budget range |
| Traffic Volume | Request limits compared against your expected monthly requests |
| Technical Requirements | WebSocket, GraphQL, SDK, OpenAPI, Webhooks matching |
| Commercial Use | CommercialUse and WhiteLabel flags checked if required |
| Official Data | Verified status and official data partnerships checked |
The Fit Score is expressed as a percentage (0–100%). A score of 94% means the provider matches 94% of your stated requirements. The base score is the provider's Overall Score, adjusted upward for each matching criterion.
